What is wastewater?

Wastewater is the liquid waste that results from use of water for domestic, commercial, industrial or agricultural purposes.

What is the Wastewater project all about?

It will help establishing modern wastewater systems in all the Wilayats of Muscat Governorate. This project aims at maintaining public health for the people, conserving ground water and contributing in realizing an environment free from pollution in addition to many other socio-economic benefits.

How much does the overall project going to cost?

This project is one of the most important infrastructure projects currently being implemented and it started with a capital of RO/- 20 million and the cost of the project reached 400 million Omani Rial.

What are the products of the Company?

High quality treated water used for irrigational purposes and fertilizers.

What is the concept of treatment?

Subjecting liquid waste to various physical, chemical and biological  processes in order to eliminate all forms of pollution is called treatment.

How many stages of treatment are there?

There are three stages of treatment: the Primary Stage, the Biological Stage and the Final Stage of Sterilization and Refinement.

Which areas in Muscat are included in the project?

The project is divided into three geographical stages:
Phase 1: Covers all areas and towns of Wilayat Bousher and part one of Darseit.
Phase 2: Covers part one of Wilayat Alseeb, Wilayat Alamirat, Wilayat Quriyat and part two of Darseit.
Phase 3: Covers part two of Alseeb, Albustan area and Alhajir area.

How long will the construction period last?

It is expected to take ten years.

What are the benefits of the project?

The project aims at providing health, environment, economic and social benefits.

Is treated water safe to drink?

Although treated water is adequately refined and sterilized, it is advisable not to use it for drinking or bathing.

How do I count the cost of connection and service?

The connection cost is decided by the size of the building. The service cost is a percentage of the water bill.

What is the membrane bio-reactor?

The membrane bio-reactor use tiny membranes refine water using very sensitive filters.

How many sewage treatment plants will be established?

Seven stations, in Darsiet, Alansub, Albustan, Al Seeb, Alamirat, Quriyat and Alhajir.

Do the stations cause health or environment problems?

The company has taken adequate measures to prevent any side-effects that might be caused by the STP. Special equipment to treat odours has been installed at the stations.

The treated water will be used for what purposes?

The treated water will be used for watering parks, sports fields and other green surfaces. It will also find its way to private users.

What is the STP?

It is the place where the sewage liquid reaches through a network of pipes. The sewage liquid is then made ready for reuse after undergoing a series of chemical and biological treatments.

Does the company produce fertilizers?

Yes, the by-product generated can be used to produce fertilizers.

What is the geographical scope of the project ?

The six wilayats of Muscat, Mutrah, Bousher, Alseeb, Alaamirat and Qurayat.

Will the roads be affected while building the network?

The main roads will not be affected since we will be employing special machinery to dig deep under them. However some by-roads may be affected by the digging operations.

How will buildings be connected to the network?

The network will be connected to the last manhole in the building.

What will happen to the existing septic tanks in the buildings?

When the building is connected to the network these tanks will be rendered functionless. The owners will then be free to treat them either by burying or sterilizing.

Who can buy the company’s products?

Any one including companies, factories and layman too.

On implementing Muscat Wastewater Scheme project, do tenants who are hiring flats / apartments have to pay connection charges or any other charges?

Tenants are not supposed to pay for the connection fees but they will have to pay the monthly charges.

Will there be a separate bill for this bill along with normal utility bills?

It will be included in the water bill

How to participate in OWSC tenders and what is the procedure?

If the value of the tender is 250.000 Omani Rial or less, then it will be announced through the company it self, but if the value is more, then the tender will be announced through the Tender Board.
